- Professional Development
The CES has produced a short presentation brochure that summarizes what it is, who it is for and what the benefits of membership are. Professional Development Annual Conference One of the major activities of the CES is its Annual Conference . This provides a forum for the discussion of major theoretical, philosophical, and practical issues in evaluation. Standards and Ethics In 1993 the CES became a sponsor of the Joint Committee on Standards for Evaluation , and has promoted the highly respected publication The Program Evaluation Standards . The Society has also adopted its own Guidelines for Ethical Conduct which are used by many as a touchstone for good practice. Essential Skills Series/Learning Opportunities The popular Essential Skills Series has been refined and continues to be offered through local Chapters across Canada. Many CES members have attended this series. Local Chapters also host specialized workshops on topical issues featuring known contributors to the evaluation field, and have informal sessions to exchange ideas or solve problems. Student Involvement The CES fosters the students' learning experience by hosting an annual Case Competition . Students from all disciplines and all levels of study are welcome to participate. In addition, we have the Student Essay Award for the best essay written in the field of evaluation. To further support student participation, the CES offers special student rates. Organization of the Society The CES has members in every Province and Territory in Canada. Chapters offer services such as resource networks, professional development activities, and forums for CES members to explore, discuss and get involved with evaluation interests. The National Council is composed of an executive and representatives from each Province and Territory. They strive to bring the national interests to all of the membership. Volunteers are the heart of this organization and participation in Chapter activities is welcome! Member needs In November and December 2003, CES conducted a member-wide survey on needs and satisfaction. A summary report is available. Membership profile "CES is a strong and vibrant multidisciplinary association with members from every province and territory in Canada as well as other countries." Nancy Porteous, Past President of the CES (The following data are reflective of the situation as of June 30, 2003) The CES has some 1,750 individual Canadian members and student members as well as 103 international members and 71 libraries. | | | Canadian members come from all areas of Canada , with a large group residing in Canada's National Capital — emphasizing the strength of the federal government program evaluation activity. Membership also varies according to the location of the annual conference and to the offering of specialized training which draws new members. | | | The majority of members are practicing professionals from government or consulting firms. About one quarter are managers — at the hinge between researchers and consumers. One fifth work in policy development and policy analysis, most likely as consumers of evaluation results. The teaching profession represents a significant one twentieth of the membership. |
What's in the Works? The CES is now working on the development of a Core Body of Knowledge (CBK), which will provide a guide to members who wish to update and enhance their evaluation skills. This work will take into account, among other things, the content of the program evaluation and related courses being taught as post-secondary courses in Canada, as well as the content of evaluation manuals of governments and NGOs.
